Learning how to play flamenco guitar is quite a challenge for any guitar student to take on. This is largely due to the fact that many of the guitar techniques commonly used to play the flamenco repertoire require years of practice to fully master so you’ll have to posses a real burning desire inside of you to sustain your motivation. This is not the easiest thing to do especially if you are trying to teach yourself from books or DVDs.

If you are a complete beginner on guitar I would not recommend you start learning flamenco until you have at least 6 to 12 months of playing experience behind you. You need to have learned all the basic open chords and also have a solid sense of rhythm and strumming techniques in order to move forward into such a demanding style of playing. Too many people rush into trying to learn what they want to play even though their current technical ability on guitar gives them very little chance of succeeding.

Many of the great flamenco guitarists we know and love today started learning when they were still very young. They were not in any rush to learn but rather had years ahead of them in which to slowly absorb and master every facet of this wonderful musical art-form. While it is still possible to attain a decent level of fluency in playing flamenco if you start later on in life the journey will be just that little bit tougher.

Taking Flamenco Guitar Lessons

If you are lucky enough to have someone living close by who is able to teach you how to play flamenco guitar then this is certainly the best option for you to take. Most of us however are not so lucky and have to either teach ourselves through buying guitar books and DVDs or else join a guitar website, one that specializes in flamenco guitar tuition.

The downside of this is that currently there are not so many good quality flamenco guitar websites around. The few that I have reviewed assume far too much of the student and tend not to break the lessons down into a simple format which complete beginners could follow and understand easily. The best place to go looking for free flamenco guitar lessons would be YouTube, here you’ll find a wealth of videos demonstrating different flamenco guitar techniques. It’s a great place to dip your toe in the water!

What About Buying A Flamenco Guitar?

Flamenco guitars are constructed in a different way to classical guitars even though they both look very similar and have nylon strings. In general you will find that buying a beginner level classical guitar is by far and away the best option if you’re just starting out. This is because flamenco guitars tend to be much more expensive to buy, even if you go for beginner models. You can get a good quality classical guitar to learn on at a cheap price and later on graduate to a genuine flamenco instrument once your playing truly deserves it. Please consider that advice carefully.
